The Sprinkler

by

Rain would be preferable, of course, but everyone was happy with this turn of events.

After too many cloudy but dry days, the Gardener had set up and turned on the sprinkler.

The robins had immediately swooped in to bathe their feathers, dig in the softening ground for beetles and worms, and serenade everyone in the garden with their favorite rainy day songs.

When they heard the robins’ rainy day singing, the chipmunk and squirrel children were confused. The sun was shining on the far side of the meadow! But one of the young squirrels realized what the songs signified and whooped with delight. As she explained what was happening, they all ran to play slip-and-slide on the now-wet moss path.
