The Luncheon

by

As a late-spring treat, Raccoon had organized a small luncheon, which Old Possum was hosting in his formal dining room.

Mama Chipmunk had ironed Possum’s favorite tablecloth, and she and Rabbit had washed five place-settings’ worth of Possum’s best china and several of his fancy serving dishes. The star of the show, of course, would be the vegetables Squirrel had found on the porch and delivered, bouncing with anticipation, to Raccoon’s tree nest.

For their luncheon, the five of them would feast on cream of asparagus soup, roasted asparagus with hollandaise sauce, grilled-cheese-and-asparagus sandwiches on sourdough, and mint-infused iced tea.
