Carmichael’s Bookstore

by

Whenever we travel, I’m always on the lookout for the coziest, most delightful independent bookstores. Here, I’m pleased to introduce you to one of our favorite indie bookstores in Louisville, Kentucky. (Find more of our favorite cozy, independent bookstores here.)

We live about an hour’s drive away from Louisville. It’s a bigger city than Lexington, and I don’t visit very often. So when I am there, I never quite remember where things are, or how to get from one of the city’s unique neighborhoods to another. Which means that I can’t pinpoint exactly where the delightful Carmichael’s Bookstores are, but I do recall that the location we visited (there are three) is on the corner, on a street of charming stores, restaurants, and a delicious coffee shop.

The original Carmichael’s location opened in 1978, and the tiny collection of family-owned bookstores has been going strong ever since.

The one we happened into is small, but it’s filled to the brim with an impressive collection of books, book-related and bookish gifts, and – another favorite of mine – puzzles. There may not be a lot of space here, but there’s an awful lot to browse through.

When you find yourself in Louisville, be sure to pay a visit to at least one of the Carmichaels!
