To find today’s Reading Nook, we follow Mama Chipmunk into the almost-hidden gap in the dry stone wall, behind the peony plant.

Turn right, scamper down a narrow corridor, and emerge, blinking in the sudden, unexpected light, into a wide, dry cavern.

Along the uneven stone walls are bookshelves woven from gathered sticks and twigs. Candles blaze from every flat surface. Mama Chipmunk’s comfiest chair sits in one corner and all of her favorite tiny books, from a lifetime of book-hoarding, fill the shelves.
