a bookish walk in NYC, part 3

Whenever we travel, I’m always on the lookout for the coziest, most delightful independent bookstores. Here, I’m pleased to introduce you to one of our favorite indie bookstores in New York City. (Find more of our favorite cozy, independent bookstores here.)

In cozy-bookshop terms, we inadvertently saved the best (or the coziest, at any rate) for last on our walking tour of Manhattan.

(If you missed one or both, you can go back to read part 1 and/or part 2 of our bookish walk through New York City.)

On our last day in the city, we explored Greenwich Village and environs, starting with an early-morning stroll through Washington Square Park: empty and peaceful on a lazy, gray Sunday morning.

Later, we wandered past the stunning home of the Jefferson Market branch of the New York Public Library, which began its life, in the 1870s, as a courthouse.

Truth be told, we were on a meandering search for a tiny bookstore I had read about but that we couldn’t seem to find … and some coffee, which, it turns out, is difficult to come by on a Sunday, when all of the Village’s miniscule coffee shops are packed with people.

We eventually stumbled upon yet another miniscule spot that actually had one tiny table available, and settled in for a chocolate chip scone and two gorgeous cups of coffee.

the coziest Manhattan bookstore …

We finally found it once we had given up the search. And by my reckoning, it might qualify as the coziest spot we found during our entire trip.

Creaky wooden floors.

Worn rugs.

Books on tables and shelves and floor-to-ceiling bookshelves.

Nooks to explore.

So many delightful novels to choose from … and a vase of fresh flowers perched on a low shelf.

All of it in just one room in an old building.

I can’t recommend this little bookshop enough. When you’re in Manhattan, please make every effort to visit Three Lives & Company.
