The Lemon Bars, part 1

by

The weather that week in the garden was terribly hot and humid, yet also very, very dry. The Gardener and his wife were doing the best they could to keep everything well-watered, but the hydrangeas (already past their prime for the year anyway) were starting to look a little crispy.

At Rabbit’s shop, nearly everyone was ordering iced tea, rather than anything hot. Likewise, no one seemed to be in the mood for walnut scones or dark-chocolate cupcakes, and so Rabbit had requested a batch of Raccoon’s rightfully famous lemon bars: cool, intensely citrusy, neither too tart nor too sweet.
