The Bench, part 2

by

Any humans walking in the woods that evening might have wondered at the crow and the possum, sitting side-by-side on the bench under the crabapple trees.

As dusk settled around the two friends, they alternated between companionable silence (sniffing the air and the delicately scented crabapple blossoms) and sharing stories about ancestors and adventures and everyday magic … the sorts of things they liked to discuss on late evenings, as nighttime closes in.

Mouse heard them talking while out for a stroll, and he eventually joined them too, bringing along a bottle of very old port and three tiny glasses.
