The Summer Quartet, part 3

That same night, not to be outdone by the crickets or the cicadas, the katydids hosted a massive, synchronized concert, in the woods and the oak trees in and surrounding the garden.

 

When the concert started, everyone who was still awake peered through their windows into the starry sky and then, one by one, crept quietly into the moonlit meadow. Mama Chipmunk brought a quilt for everyone to sit on, Rabbit and her sister both brought delicately scented candles, Raccoon brought cookies, and Old Possum (with Squirrel’s help) brought a half-full bottle of sherry and plenty of tiny crystal glasses.
